Unbox

Jabra SOLEMATE is packaged in a beautiful transparency solid plastic box. You can see the portable speaker through the box. It took some practice to remove the lit.

Lift the speaker, you found a 3.5mm audio cable nicely hidden at the bottom of speaker. Inside the box contains a charger, a USB cable, a durable sound bag, quick start guide.

Design

Jabra SOLEMATE design is mininal, clean. It looks like a small round corners brick (172 mm x 64 mm x 70 mm). Weights only 610 grams (like a 500ml soda bottle), SOLEMATE is light enough to be hold in one hand.

The non-slip rubber sole base not only allows you to place the speaker on any surface, it also securely store a 3.5mm audio cable. Brilliant!

The review unit I received is white color with orange color audio cable. There’s also black color version with yellow color audio cable.

On the top, you get 3 buttons: Volume -, Volume +, and Answer/end button. The buttons are not backlit to be visible in night party.

On the right side are mini USB port, 3.5 mm jack connector, On/Off/Pairing switch, battery & connection lights. On the left side, you get a carry strap. It only fits my 2 fingers, I would like it to be big enough to worn around wrist.

Performance

Speaker

In the small package, it contains 3 front facing speakers (1x 2-inch subwoofer, 2x custom made tweeters for high notes), 3 channel Class D digital amplifier, and 4x 1-inch bass slave in the back. The rubber sole is vibration damping for better sound quality.

SOLEMATE can output up to 120 dBSPL, that’s like Vuvuzela horn at 1 m! (possibly result hearing damage) Of course, you don’t want to use the max. volume and lose sound output. I use the middle volume.

The bass is strong, the treble is OK. Human voice is clear. Overall, I like the SOLEMATE sound. It is better than X-mini speakers.

Disclosure: I don’t have DJ good ears.

Sound bag

Jabra SOLEMATE portable speaker is outdoor friendly. It is sweat, dust and splash resistant. Bring it with you to play music at anytime and anywhere. For added protection, SOLEMATE inside the durable sound bag that comes with the package.

I took the risk of damaging the speaker by pouring water on the sound bag… guess what, the speaker inside is dry! In fact, the water does not get absorb by the sound bag.

Connect

There are 3 ways to play your music on Jabra SOLEMATE: 3.5mm jack connector, USB cable, and bluetooth (wireless).

The 3.5mm jack connector is the easiest and fastest way. The USB cable doesn’t work for Mac. Bluetooth wireless connection work with any bluetooth supported audio device (phone, computer, tablet, etc).

To setup bluetooth pairing, you press and hold the on/off/pairing switch up for 3 seconds, bluetooth light flash in pink, and SOLEMATE tells you it is ready forpairing.

I tested bluetooth pairing with iPhone and iMac. It works great. In case your device loss connection with SOLEMATE, simply repeat the bluetooth pairing steps.

Speakerphone

Did I tell you that Jabra SOLEMATE is also a speakerphone with build-in microhphone? After connected to phone via bluetooth, you can use SOLEMATE to make/answer/end call.

In my test call with my wife, she said that the sound quality is similar to iPhone’s speakerphone. Meaning, it works.

Voice guidance

SOLEMATE does not have LED to display information, instead it uses voice guidance. Press the Answer button, it tells you the battery status “Battery Full” or “Battery Low”, and “Recharge battery” when it needs immediate battery juice.

For bluetooth pairing, it tells you that it is ready for pairing “Go ahead and connect me. Use the Bluetooth setting in your phone”, and “SOLEMATE is connected” when pairing is successful. (watch demo video in this post)

These voice feedback gives human-feeling to the portable speaker. I am impressed.

Battery

As a portable speaker, the battery life is very important. The SOLEMATE build-in rechargeable lithiumion battery claims last up to 8 hours wireless music time, up to 40 days standby time. Full recharge only takes 2.5 hours.

I tested SOLEMATE as my iMac speaker via bluetooth connection. It indeed played more than 8 hours without recharging.

With the small size and bluetooth connectivity, it is a great add-on for your mobile office (play music on notebook, answer calls hands-free via bluetooth).

BEAUTIFUL music can be flawed by poor sound delivery. For music lovers, a decent if not superior sound system is instrumental for their listening pleasure.

Jabra has put out HALO2, a new device that will enhance your musical experience. The device may seem like a regular headphone but it is, in fact, quite decent.

The HALO2 steers away from the normal, bulky ear muff design. Instead it sports a modern trim line design which resembles a headband that extends to cover the ear.

The headphone is collapsible into three parts by folding the ear pieces in. In its compact folded state, the headphone is easy to keep and carry around while its accessories, such as charging cable do not add much weight either.
The minimal design makes way for a unique method to switch on the headphone. Simply by unfolding the ear pieces and snapping back the hinges into its designated place will turn it on while it shuts down as soon as you fold it back for keeping.

Its dark velvet inner lining feels luxurious against the skin, making it comfortable for long use. However the lining also attracts dust easily and can be quite a challenge to clean, even with the use of the sticky lint catcher there are still spots visible.

A good solution is a carrying case, preferably made out of plastic rather than soft fabric.

Although it does not look organic, its adjustable ear pieces rest nicely, covering the lobes at just the right level. It is also tight enough to survive your jogging routine or physical workout session without falling off.

Being able to deliver music wirelessly also means there no cables or wires to annoy you. Its Bluetooth connectivity ensures the device works well within the five meters range.

I discovered that I could carry on with my chores around my home, in and out of different rooms while my smartphone is safely tucked away in the bedroom.

While at that, HALO2 also saved me from having to run from the kitchen back to the bedroom when the phone rings. The device performs well as a Bluetooth headset for taking voice calls. Just like the music it delivered, the audio reception I got while on voice calls is great.

Back to design, there is not much to fiddle with other than the one button on the side, where you can perform a handful of tasks depending on the way you tap or press it. I love the one touch volume adjuster that only requires you to swipe your finger up or down to increase or decrease volume.

As a Bluetooth headset, the HALO2 leaks just enough noise for you to still be aware of your surroundings. Even though you have the headset on while shopping for example, you can still detect what’s going on. Voice on the other end comes out clear and even without an apparent microphone, there’s no need to raise my voice to be heard. According to friends with whom I had conversations with using the HALO2, they received my voice clean without background noise, thanks to its Voice Isolation technology. For users of smartphones with screens as large as 4-inch and above, not having to put your phone next to your ear also saves you from embarrassment.

However note that its volume can go up real loud, so if you are using it as a Bluetooth hands-free kit for driving please do it with caution. Keep the volume down so that your conversation does not become a distraction. That said, the HALO2 is more of a music listening tool that keeps up with your mobile lifestyle, and in this role the device excels. For the clarity and convenience it offers, it is definitely worth checking out.

So I recently got a new toy to play with. At first when I heard it was a Jabra I was like, “Cool! A new Bluetooth headset!”. I mean that’s what Jabra is famous for right?

Then I heard it was a set of portable speakers. Really? From Jabra? Yes indeed!

Here’s a little info on Jabra:

Now on to my review.

This nifty multifunctional portable Bluetooth® speaker that enables sharing and streaming of entertainment with anyone, anytime and anywhere and is equipped with strong, deep bass from an integrated subwoofer (yes a subwoofer inside this compact little package!) and rich, vibrant acoustics from dual tweeters.

Now I decided to test the Solemate indoors and outdoors. In my brother’s 200 square feet room I connected it to my brother’s S2 and the Solemate threatened to wake up my neighbours on max volume setting. Next I tried it in a 300 square foot room and it was sufficiently powerful. Outdoors it was not bad as I thought the sound quality was pretty good up to 10+ feet away on maximum setting.

I also tried connecting it via the 3.5mm cable and the micro USB cable to test it’s plug and play capabilities and my PC and laptop had no trouble detecting and immediately switching to using it to play. Useful gadget to have when making presentations using my laptop at client’s offices as I won’t have to rely on the puny laptop speakers when showing videos.

You can play music while lying at the beach, having a picnic in a park, hosting a little get-together, or chilling out at home. Amplify the volume up to an impressive 120 dB SPL* while streaming YouTube videos or watching movies. The Jabra SOLEMATE™ connects to any multimedia device using Bluetooth® technology, a 3.5mm audio cable or USB cable and caters to different consumer preference, making it a very cool looking speaker for indoors or outdoors.
